The road from the capital takes you through the southern lowlands of Iceland, a fertile farming area, to the area of the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. We will stop at the 60 meters high (197 ft) Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which not only is a true eyecatcher but the only known waterfall of its kind, where it is possible to walk behind it (We recommend you to to bring a raincoat). The waterfall is very picturesque and therefore its photo can be found in many books and calendars.
After Seljalandsfoss we will drive on a rugged road and through glacial rivers. On the way we will pass by Gígjökull glacier, a small outlet glacier extending out of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano into a glacial lagoon, surrounded by glacial moraine. A little further, on the way, we will stop again for an optional hike into the beautifully carved canyon called Stakkholtsgja.
When in Thorsmork, you will have the opportunity to hike or just relax and enjoy the landscape. Its beauty, peace and quiet is overwhelming. Most people who visit Thorsmork immediately fall in love with it. *Note that there are no restaurants around this area so we’ll need to stop on the way to buy some food to bring along.
