The 90 km long peninsula offers a varied and stunning scenery enriched with mountain ranges shaped by volcanic and glacial erosion. Far out on the peninsula, we will find the mystical Snæfellsjökull glacier (1,448m), wrapped in the literary glow of Jules Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth, where the protagonists find the entrance to the passage leading to the middle ground on Snæfellsjökull.
Snæfellsnes Peninsula offers mineral resources, white sandy beaches, lively bird cliffs, small towns and small sceneries which makes a trip to the peninsula truly eye-catching.
One of the first stop of the day is at Arnarstapi, where you can enjoy the plentiful bird life and amazing rock formations to enjoy and admire.
The black sandy beaches of Djupalonssandur and Dritvik are to explore next, to see the two several decades old shipwrecks that are still spread along the beach. These beaches are stunning and really interesting places to view due to their unusual cliff formations.
The sea stacks Londrangar are a lava neck, formed when magma on its way up through the vents of an active volcano. The tallest of them are 75 m high.
We will also visit the little fishing villages Olafsvik, Rif and Hellissandur on our way to Stykkisholmur on the North part of the Peninsula. There we’ll explore some of the most beautiful mountains on the peninsula such as Helgafell, Kirkjufell and Drapuhlídarfjall.
It is also a must while at Snæfellsnes to go on a 45 minute guided tour into the mystical lava tube cave Vatnshellir (‘Water Cave’) at extra cost.
